Medical research and therapies are advancing at an incredibly fast rate and stem cells represent a bright future in this field of study. Stem cells have properties that set them apart from all other cell types and make them very useful for therapies and treatments. They have the ability to divide and differentiate into any type of cell within the body. They are essential to the functioning of the human body because they repair and replace dying cells and damaged tissues. There are two types of stem cells, embryonic stem cells and somatic (adult) stem cells. They differ in their properties and exist at different stages of development in the body. Currently stem cells are being used in several treatments such as bone marrow transplantation and cancer treatment. There are also numerous other applications for stem cells in the medical field. They are becoming some of the most important cells in advancing treatment for diseases.
